Zakynthos is the third largest Greek island of the Ionian Islands Region in the Ionian Sea. The Ancient Greek poet Homer mentions the island in both the Iliad and the Odyssey. Homer states that the first inhabitants of the island were the son of King Dardanos of Troy, called Zakynthos and his men. In mythology, the island was then conquered by King Arkesios of Kefalonia, then by Odysseus of Ithaca.
The Athenian military leader Tolmides formed an alliance with Zakynthos during the first Peloponnesian War dating around 459 and 446 BC. The alliance was very important to Tolmides and the Athenians as Zakynthos was very rich in tar. This tar was used to protect war ships as they went to sea. Tar kept the ships from rot and decay as they made their long voyages into battle.
One of the most well recognized landmarks of the island of Zakynthos is Navagio (Greek for shipwreck) Beach. Due to its isolation by the surrounding high cliffs, Navagio Beach is only accessible via boat or parachute!! Wouldn't this make for a great vacation spot?? The beach and sea floor are composed of white pebbles and beautiful clean turquoise waters just begging to be swam in and enjoyed. I would totally spend a day basking in the sun here!!
The island of Zakynthos is rich and amazingly diverse in its flora and fauna. There you can find: sandy white beaches, cliff lined coasts, mountainous regions, sea turtles, lakes, sea caves, and natural parks which preserve the tropical vegetation of the island.
Our line of sandals are named after Greek places and words that encourage us to dream and tap into our senses. Zakynthos is a classic sandal that speaks of the history created on this lovely Greek island. It is not hard to imagine the characters in Homer's the Iliad wearing something similar to this. The Zakynthos sandal transcends time and remains "in style" to this day and for years to come. Elisa, one of our friends wears hers like this
Perfect for a day exploring the island like so many before her!! Personally, I love this sandal worn with socks!! Yes, I said it...SOCKS! But take some inspiration from Birkenstocks and give it a try, we would love to see it for some fall weather fashion ideas! I will share mine tomorrow!! For now, enjoy and if you ever go to Zakynthos or have been, let us know what were your favorite places to explore and sites to see!!
